As part of efforts to improve matric results, the North West Department of Education has started to host mid-year winter camps.

On Friday (7/7), 32 494 learners and 1 979 teachers in North West were accommodated at 112 camps across the province housing residential and day campers to assist learners in their problematic areas of learning such as Setswana Home Language and gateway subjects.

According to the departmental spokesperson, Mphata Molokwane, the camps will run until Saturday 15 July 2023.

Molokwane said the MEC for Education in the North West, Viola Motsumi, has encouraged learners to give their best throughout the study camps as stakes are high for reaching a spot in the top three with their year-end results. Motsumi earlier emphasised the importance of improving matric results this year by keeping track of performances in schools across the province from the first term.

"I humbly plea with all our education stakeholders to rally with the department to realise our vision of top-three when the minister of Education announces 2023's results,” she said.

Meanwhile, Molokwane added that Motsumi has encouraged all Grade 12 learners to take camps as a stepping stone towards their future. She said learners have invested 13 years of their schooling and it is time to yield positive outcomes, such as the top three spot for the Class of 2023.

Molokwane revealed that the camps will be protected and generators will be used as a backup when load-shedding strikes. He further urged parents to release and support learners to engage in the camps.
