The Departmental spokesperson for Community Safety and Transport Management in North West, Oshebeng Koonyaditse, said a sedan and utility vehicle collided on the Riviera Park Bridge next to Rugby stadium at about 00:30. Preliminary investigations showed that both vehicles were travelling towards Mahikeng CBD on the R49.

Koonyaditse said in their findings, it appeared one vehicle was overtaking the other and ended up bumping on its driver’s side.

Three people were declared dead on the scene while the other two died in hospital. The deceased includes one of the drivers. The other two were hospitalised with serious injuries.

North West Community Safety and Transport Management MEC Sello Lehari has sent his heartfelt condolences to the families, wishing the injured a speedy recovery. 

Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
