The University of the Free State is once again in the spotlight following another alleged incident of racism at its Bloemfontein campus.
A student allegedly hurled a racial slur at a fellow student. The university's spokesperson, Lacea Loader, told OFM News the management of the university is aware of the allegation. She said it allegedly happened during a practical session of first-year students on the Bloemfontein Campus on 14 September 2023 when a student allegedly levelled a racial slur at another student.
"The university views the matter in a very serious light and has launched an urgent and formal investigation into the alleged incident. The UFS condemns any form of racial actions from its students and staff and will act decisively if any of these actions speak against the values of the university," Loader said.
A lecturer is also investigated by the South African Human Rights Commission after calling white people “land thieves”. The lobby group AfriForum has since reported the lecturer to the commission, which in turn agreed to probe the lecturer.
