“As the funeral proceeds, Sibongile Ngwana's family, friends, and community gather to mourn her untimely death and honour her memory.”

The funeral of the late Sibongile Ngwana is currently taking place at her home in Phase 7, Bloemfontein.

A DNA analysis last week confirmed the remains found was that of Ngwana’s. As the funeral proceeds, her family, friends, and the community gather to mourn her untimely death and honour her memory.

Ngwana’s charred remains were discovered on the M10 road at Bloemfontein in January, after she had been reported missing in November last year. According to her family, she had left home to go shopping and never returned.

‘The accused remain in custody pending further DNA analysis, investigations’

On Wednesday (5/6), the police confirmed the remains were those of Ngwana. According to Free State SAPS spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, two suspects, aged 27 and 33, were arrested in connection with her murder. They have appeared in court and remain in custody pending further DNA analysis and the investigation of other evidence.

Ngwana’s tragic case is one of several involving missing women and girls in the Free State during that period, casting a dark cloud over the province. Lesego Mamello Motaung (22) went missing on 30 October last year. Her disappearance was reported by her aunt at the Park Road Police Station.

Lerato Masiu (23) has been missing since 16 November, when she was last seen by her mother.

Machaka Radebe’s body (16) was found two days after being reported missing in December, discovered by a passer-by.

The spate of kidnappings and murders prompted a strong reaction from the community and government officials. Former Free State Premier Mxolisi Dukwana urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police.

Ngwana’s family has expressed a mixture of relief and sorrow. “Knowing we are burying our daughter’s remains, we can finally find some peace,” a family spokesperson said.
