Kimberley’s ‘Breaking Barriers – The Fitzpatrick Story’ honoured at film festival─── CASEY-LEE ANTHONY 06:00 Fri, 29 Nov 2024
Since winning best documentary at the Thokoza Film Festival, the director and producer has started on his next project: a short romantic film that will also be produced in Kimberley.
Breaking Barriers – The Fitzpatrick Story is not available for public viewing as it’s still in the running for a film festival competition in 2025.
“This was my first documentary that I wrote and directed,” said writer and director Eric Kok, “and I am extremely excited and proud that our hard work is being recognised even outside of our province.”

The documentary follows Kimberley resident Ricardo Fitzpatrick, a differently abled individual who had his leg amputated as an infant, sharing his journey from a bodybuilder to a powerlifter.
“Despite his physical challenges, Ricardo’s joyful disposition and unwavering determination serve as a testament to the human spirit’s resilience,” said Kok.
By bringing Ricardo Fitzpatrick’s journey to the forefront, the film not only celebrates individual triumphs but advocates for greater inclusivity and support within communities.

The documentary also received two official selections at the Africa Rising International Film Festival and Encounters Film Festivals in 2023. Other productions by Kok Media have received seven nominations and won six.
“Breaking Barriers – The Fitzpatrick Story was also honoured with an official screening during the 2024 Olympics in Paris, further highlighting its global impact,” added Kok.
As Breaking Barriers – The Fitzpatrick Story continues to gain recognition on national and international platforms, Kok said it stands as a beacon of hope and a reminder that with perseverance and passion, barriers can indeed be broken.
