Sassa: No grant suspensions, only eligibility reviews underway─── 14:20 Thu, 10 Jul 2025

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has clarified that no social grants have been suspended, contrary to some public commentary.
The agency is currently undertaking a review process to verify the eligibility of beneficiaries suspected of having undisclosed additional income.
Sassa emphasised that any delays in grant payments are momentary and occur only until a beneficiary has successfully completed the review process. This review is not intended as a punitive measure but rather to ensure continued eligibility and prevent the misuse of public funds.

According to the statement, issued by Mr Themba Matlou, CEO of Sassa, grant beneficiaries and the public were assured that the review process is being conducted for the “better good of the government fiscus”. The aim is to ensure grants are paid only to eligible beneficiaries and to eradicate fraudulent elements.
It further stated that Matlou emphasised that beneficiaries must disclose income sources during initial applications and inform Sassa of financial changes, as breaking these conditions could lead to legal action.
“The review of social grants helps identify beneficiaries who may no longer qualify due to changes in financial, medical, or legal circumstances and serves as a confirmation of life or existence, ensuring that grants are not paid out to deceased individuals or those who have relocated without updating their records. More importantly, reviews allow Sassa to detect and prevent cases where individuals continue receiving grants despite being listed on payroll systems of other entities (public or private),” said Matlou.

He added that, more importantly, reviews allow Sassa to detect and prevent cases where individuals continue receiving grants despite being listed on payroll systems of other entities, whether public or private.
Sassa is actively working to capacitate all its local offices to handle the increased volume of people visiting for various services, including those coming in for reviews.
If your grant is under review, beneficiaries should visit their nearest Sassa Local Office and provide a valid South African ID, proof of income, bank statements, proof of residence, medical referral report, marriage certificate, death certificate, and other relevant supporting documents. These documents help confirm the grant's status and ensure eligibility for the appropriate grant type.
