The programme which aims to give Grade 12 learners industry-specific certifications, started with an enlightening tour of SA Truck Bodies, giving learners valuable hands-on instruction prior to the formal launch at the Louis Botha Technical High School in Bloemfontein.

The launch was led by Education MEC, Mantlhake Julia Maboya, who emphasised the programme’s critical role in preparing learners for a changing workforce. “We are working on different sectors to make sure they combat unemployment. 

“We have to drive inclusive economy and also create jobs, and also reduce poverty levels in the country.”

For this year, the Free State’s learners programmes has strategically focused on two key sectors. The agricultural sector has already seen remarkable success, with approximately 450 learners completing their training and receiving their certificates.

The current launch aims to equip 45 Grade 12 learners with specialised vocational competencies for the engineering sector, preparing them for the job market. Maboya said these extra credentials will greatly improve pupils’ career chances and offer worthwhile credits toward additional education.

‘We are leveraging on the power of networking’

The program’s success is largely attributed to its strong partnerships with various organisations, including the Sector Education and Training Authority, which is crucial for its tour guide training program.

“What we are doing, we are leveraging on the power of networking more than anything else.” This collaborative approach is central to how the department ensures sufficient resources are available to sustain the programme.

The smooth execution of the day’s events was assisted by Education spokesperson Howard Ndaba who managed various tasks to ensure a seamless launch.

The inauguration at Louis Botha was well-attended, with the enthusiastic participation of the 45 learners poised to embark on this transformative educational journey.
