The family of one of the three police officers whose bodies were discovered in the Hennops River in Centurion earlier this year says they’ve lost faith in the justice system.

The case, which has gripped the nation since the officers were first reported missing in April, remains unsolved. More questions than answers surround the mysterious circumstances of their deaths.

Consts. Linda Cebekhulu (24), Keamogetswe Buys (30), and Boipelo Senoge (20) were en route from Bloemfontein to Limpopo for deployment when they disappeared. Their vehicle was later discovered submerged in sections of the Heenops River, with their bodies found days apart in different areas of the river.

Police confirmed this week that the case is still active and receiving focused attention, said national police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe. “Preliminary post-mortem reports have been received, but the final reports, which will include blood alcohol results, toxicology, and histology, are still awaited.”

These findings are critical to concluding the investigation.

But for the Senoge family, patience has long run out. Boipelo’s sister, Tshegofatso Senoge, expressed the family’s heartbreak and growing mistrust of the authorities.

Hearsay and theories

“We are very hurt, we are troubled. Sleep doesn’t come; we don’t know the truth.

“As of late, we don’t know what’s happening. It's just so many theories, so much hearsay. It’s a lot that we have to deal with, and it delays the process of us healing because we are hearing this and that.

“We’re only asking for the truth as to what happened. I think that will end all this mystery, and it will help us heal and know what happened to my sister.”

They learned of updates to the investigation through the media, not directly from the police, Tshegofatso said. “We want justice, we want the truth, we are tired of this back and forth, cat and mouse. We just want the truth. I feel like they are failing us every day.”

Her father, Rev. Paul Senoge, echoed her sentiments, saying the family has not received any formal communication from the authorities for some time. “They have neglected the families and kept us in the dark,” he said, adding that the police’s explanation of a car accident does not add up.

National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola previously stated that all three officers had died in a car accident. Senoge, who was driving, and Cebekhulu were found in the front section of the wreck, while Buys’ body was located downstream with the rear portion of the vehicle.

‘As an advanced driver himself, he has never seen such an accident scene’

“My sister was a careful driver – that I know. I drove with her all the time, so it does not make sense to me,” said Tshegofatso. Her father added that, as an advanced driver himself, he has never seen such an accident scene that has left so many loopholes.

The family also rejected any suggestions that alcohol may have been involved, especially their daughter, who was reportedly behind the wheel at the time, emphasising that Boipelo was a responsible citizen, and she would not have even entertained the thought of drinking alcohol while she was pregnant.

The family also said they are now struggling with no one working in their household, as Boipelo was their breadwinner.
