The South African Civil Aviation Authority (Sacaa) hosted a series of educational tours for high school students at the Bram Fischer International Airport in Bloemfonteina on Friday (3/10).

The initiative is spearheaded by Sacaa and specialised airport personnel, with the support of the department of travel. It provided the learners with a rare, behind the curtain glimpse into the complex ecosystem that keeps air travel safe and operational.

“We are hoping our message today to you will make you love aviation,” the department said in a message to learners.

Far from a standard classroom lecture, the tours help learners to dive deep into the high-stakes world of airport life. Students were granted unprecedented access to critical operational zones.

This included exploring the inner workings of precision aircraft maintenance and storage hangars and witnessing the rapid response capabilities of the airport’s fire and rescue management teams.

Experts led the groups, emphasising the demanding technical skills required to ensure airworthiness and emergency readiness.

A major highlight was the visit to the dynamic nexus of air traffic control. Students observed, in real time, the seamless communication that guarantees every take-off and landing is meticulously managed.

Airport staff walked the learners through the core of aviation safety, explaining how technical systems, from intricate electrical grids to advanced navigation equipment, are constantly monitored.

The administrative framework governing strict regulatory compliance was also brought to light, underscoring that aviation safety is as much about paperwork as it is about technology.

‘It’s very interesting to be here, and I got to learn a lot’

The students’ reactions reflected the success of the programme. When asked about the impact of the experience, one learner – who wished to remain anonymous –expressed a sentiment shared by many: “It’s very interesting to be here, and I got to learn a lot.”

Sacca’s initiative aimed to provide previously disadvantaged youth in the Free State with exposure to specialised careers in the aviation sector, including roles such as pilots, engineers, and air traffic controllers.
