The department of labour and employment is monitoring the situation closely at the Petrusburg centre after community protests impacted the centre.

Safety concerns for both clients and employees were raised. As a precautionary measure, the department decided to suspend operations at the centre until further notice.

The centre was temporarily closed on Monday (6/10) due to a community protest. This is not the first time community members shut down the centre.

In September, angry residents closed it following allegations of nepotism and unfair hiring practices. The community insisted the offices will remain closed until senior officials address them directly.

“The department is monitoring the situation and will reopen the centre as soon as it’s deemed safe to do so,” said Free State department of employment and labour spokesperson Teboho Thejane. “We recognise the right of communities to raise concerns and remain open to constructive engagement.

“However, we urge that all demonstrations take place in a peaceful and lawful manner to prevent disruption of essential public services. In the meantime, clients are encouraged to make use of the department’s online services or to visit the nearest alternative labour centres where possible.”

In September, community members alleged the director of unemployment insurance in the Free State appointed relatives and associates to all advertised vacant client service officer posts.

Frustration among residents grew after attempts to address the matter through official channels were met with delays, prompting them to close the centre.

“Every position was filled by individuals linked to the director, many of whom reportedly come from KwaZulu-Natal. This has raised suspicions the recruitment process was manipulated to benefit a select group,” said community leader Motsamai Solo.

‘We appreciate the public’s understanding and cooperation’

“Investigations can be done at the Zastron, Petrusburg, as well as Botshabelo labour centres to find out how many of those who have recently been employed are from KwaZulu-Natal.”

The department apologised for any inconvenience caused. “We appreciate the public’s understanding and cooperation during this time,” said Thejane.

He previously said he was not aware of the matter of nepotism. “If those matters have been officially raised, the department and public service do have channels and policy prescriptions to address those.”
