Free State authorities are again calling on motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads following yet another fatal accident, this time on the R57.
Two people were declared dead at the scene, while two others sustained moderate injuries during a multiple-vehicle collision on the R57 between Sasolburg and Heilbron on Tuesday (16/12).
Emergency services responded promptly, said Free State road incident management system spokesperson Sipho Towa. The road was partially closed for some time to allow for the clearing of the scene and to ensure the safety of motorists.
Towa urged motorists to remain vigilant at all times, particularly during the festive season when traffic volumes are significantly higher.
He reiterated the importance of responsible driving and shared the following safety tips with road users:
- Slow down: Reduce your speed, especially on busy roads like the R57.
- Stay alert: Avoid distractions while driving, and take regular breaks to rest.
- Wear seatbelts: Ensure all passengers are buckled up to minimize injury risk.
- Avoid overtaking: Be patient and avoid reckless overtaking maneuvers.
The latest crash adds to a growing list of fatal incidents on Free State roads, including an accident on the N1 near Verkeerdevlei that claimed the life of a Kariega (Uitenhage) rapper on Thursday (11/12).
During a Mangaung council meeting on Monday (15/12), PA Cllr De Bruin Matthews expressed appreciation to Free State Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae for her hands-on support following recent road accidents.
Meanwhile, community safety, roads and transport MEC Jabu Mbalula emphasised road safety is a shared responsibility between motorists and law enforcement. Free State roads are critical transport routes connecting six provinces and a neighbouring country, making safety measures particularly urgent during the festive travel period.
Mbalula advised motorists to rest regularly, stressing that fatigue remains one of the leading causes of road accidents. Stop every two hours or 200 km to stay alert.
Road users should plan their trips, avoid drinking and driving, adhere to speed limits, and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on long journeys.
