‘Prophet’ arrested after decades-long crime spree in Free State─── 10:48 Fri, 02 Jan 2026
Police have arrested a man (55) suspected of committing multiple rapes and robberies over more than two decades in Welkom, Thabong, and Bloemfontein.
Provincial police spokesperson Mahlomola Kareli says the suspect’s run from the law came to an end recently after he allegedly attacked a woman (21). She was walking home from town through the Phahameng graveyard in Magengenene Lane, Bloemfontein, when she was assaulted and raped.
Community members responded swiftly, chased the suspect, and handed him over to the Mangaung police.

“Preliminary investigations have revealed a disturbing pattern of deception. The suspect reportedly posed as a ‘prophet’, claiming that his ancestors required victims to perform rituals in the graveyard,” said Kareli.
“He would persuade his victims to undress for a so-called cleansing. He would cut the victim’s hair and burn it on a grave, then proceed to rape them and steal their mobile phones, claiming ‘witches’ would use the devices to track them.”
Through detective work and DNA profiling, the suspect has been linked to seven additional cases of rape and robbery, five in Mangaung and two in Welkom.

Forensic evidence connects him to crimes as far back as 1999. Records show the suspect was out on parole when he allegedly resumed his criminal activities in 2022.
The recent graveyard attack marks the eighth case now officially linked to him. The suspect is expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court shortly on multiple charges of rape and robbery.
The investigation is being led by Detective Sergeant Bessie Nthoba of the Mangaung family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit.
Victims urged to come forward
“The SAPS believes there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward.
Anyone who was victimised in a similar manner is urged to contact Detective Sergeant Nthoba on 082 886 8979, call the Crime Stop Tip-off Line on 08600 10111, or report it at their nearest police station.”
