Westdene street market to feature ‘twilight snooze’─── REFILWE BEKANE 16:00 Mon, 16 Feb 2026
A Bloemfontein neighbourhood is scheduled to host its first Westdene street market of the year on Friday, 27 March.
The event, which began in 2023, has evolved from a small neighbourhood gathering into a vital platform for local culture and entrepreneurship. This year’s edition will be held at Victoria Park, chosen for its historic charm and its ability to accommodate the market’s growing popularity.
Attendees can expect a diverse line-up of entertainment, including the Trashcan Preachers, the St Andrews music academy, and even a fire dancer to illuminate the evening.
“I love when all the vendors have set up, and the stage and the artists are ready,” said ZigZag Creations event organiser Marie-Louise Smith.
In addition to the entertainment and overnight activities, Smith emphasises the market functions as a strategic entry point for the local economy. It provides a low-risk environment for young entrepreneurs and start-up brands to test their business models without the high costs associated with permanent retail leases.
The organisation maintains the quality of the event by limiting vendor numbers per category, prioritising a specific selection of handmade crafts and gourmet food.
Reconnect
The social fabric of the neighbourhood is also at the heart of the event. In an increasingly digital world, the physical gathering aims to provide a rare space for residents from across Bloemfontein to reconnect.
This year’s market specifically targets young families, offering pony rides and jumping castles to ensure the next generation feels a connection to the suburb’s heritage.
“This is for everyone, but specific for young families because younger children are not really accustomed, and they’ve maybe never slept over in a tent,” said Smith.
Recent updates to the area include the addition of tortoises to the Springbok area and the ongoing development of the conservancy’s footpaths. Plans involve a project to fence off and restore the open spaces near Albrecht Street and Happy Valley.
Smith hopes for support of local talent while keeping Westdene clean, safe, and vibrant. With an entrance fee of just R10, the community is encouraged to bring their own chairs, enjoy and witness what the local creators have to offer.
