Authorities are searching for a leopard that escaped from a big cat facility on the Mooifontein farm near Reddersburg following severe weather damage.

Preliminary investigations revealed the animal escaped from the top corner of a camp on the farm on Monday (16/2) morning. Residents have been urged to remain vigilant as the search enters day three.

Severe weather conditions caused significant damage to the property, including fallen trees that disrupted the electric fencing system, allowing the leopard to break free, said the farm owner.

“Environmental management inspectors from the provincial department, together with a search team from the police, are currently on site,” said Free State Destea spokesperson Mojalefa Mphapang.

“Teams are working tirelessly to track and safely capture the animal.”

“Communities and motorists travelling in the vicinity of the facility are urged to remain vigilant. Anyone who sees the leopard is requested to contact Leepile Garekoe on 079 951 0200 immediately.”

No one has reported seeing the animal since its escape, and drones are also being used in the search.

The latest incident follows a previous leopard scare north of Bloemfontein in January after reports a leopard had been seen in the Glen area. The animal was allegedly spotted between Glen Agricultural College and the N1 near the R30.

However, after interviewing the eyewitness and analysing photographs, authorities determined the animal was in fact a serval, which is not considered dangerous to humans. Officials also confirmed all leopards at nearby registered facilities were accounted for.

Safety precautions if a wild animal is seen

  • Avoid spreading rumours or panic: Notify other responsible persons, but do not spread unconfirmed information or speculation on social media.
  • Stay calm and keep your distance: Do not approach, chase, or try to chase the animal away, as this may provoke an aggressive reaction.
  • Keep children and pets indoors: Ensure children and animals are indoors and under supervision until authorities have assessed the situation.
  • Move to a safe place: Stay in your vehicle with the windows closed, or move indoors if you are on foot, and avoid sudden movements or loud noises.
  • Report the sighting immediately: Contact law enforcement, environmental authorities, wildlife experts, or the SPCA with clear details such as the location, time, and direction in which the animal moved.
