Police in the Free State have arrested an alleged fraudster accused of deceiving businesses in Bloemfontein by posing as a professional soccer player.

According to police reports, the suspect, who allegedly operated under the name Junior Mahlangu, gained the trust of business owners by claiming to be a player for a Premier Soccer League team in Gauteng who had recently been transferred to a Bloemfontein-based club.

The suspect appeared in court on Tuesday (17/2) and is facing multiple charges of theft and fraud. The case has been postponed to Monday (23/2) for a formal bail application and further profiling, confirmed Free State police spokesperson Sgt Mahlomola Kareli.

False persona

It’s understood the suspect used a false persona to defraud several establishments across the Bloemfontein area. His primary targets reportedly included petrol stations, restaurants, and guest houses.

At the time of his arrest, the suspect was found in possession of a black Volkswagen Golf 8.

“While the investigating team has already compiled a strong case, the team believes there may be more victims who have not yet reported their encounters with the suspect.”

Police are urging any business owner or individual who may have fallen victim to the suspect to come forward.

“If you have information or wish to open a case docket, please contact Det. Sgt Majoro or Capt. Jean Marais on 082 779 8868. Alternatively, visit your nearest police station to register a formal complaint or phone Crime Stop on 086 00 10111.”

Authorities believe additional victims may still be unaccounted for as investigations continue.
