The Free State department of education is inviting teachers to be recognised for their exceptional work in classrooms across the province by entering the 2026 National Teaching Awards (NTAs).

The awards aim to celebrate innovation, leadership, and dedication, while encouraging teachers to continue raising the standard of education and shaping the next generation of learners. Nominations for the NTAs can be submitted by schools, district officials, or teachers themselves.

Eligible entrants must be South African citizens with at least two years of teaching experience in most of the 17 categories. The categories include excellence in primary and secondary school teaching, inclusive education, life skills, technology-enhanced learning, mathematics, physical sciences, accounting, and agricultural subjects.

“These awards are so important because teachers are sacrificing a lot,” said NTA provincial coordinator Olga Lekitlane. “Despite many challenges, there are educators committed to teaching for the benefit of learners and the province.

“We know we have excellent teachers across all levels, from early childhood development to secondary education. The awards are an opportunity to showcase the exceptional work in our classrooms and gain national recognition for the province.”

Grade R teachers lay the groundwork for all future learning, primary school educators strengthen foundational skills, and life skills teachers prepare learners to become independent, mature adults, she said. “Recognising excellence in these areas ensures teachers and learners are celebrated and supported.”

The department introduced two additional provincial categories – excellence in teaching accounting and excellence in teaching agricultural subjects.

These categories were initiated by the MEC for education, Dr Julia Maboya, to recognise educators who are helping to address critical skills shortages while preparing learners for key sectors of the economy.

Unlike the other categories, which progress to the national stage, these awards are specific to the province and highlight areas considered vital to the Free State’s development.

“The inclusion of these categories reflects the province’s broader development priorities. Recognising excellence aims to encourage more learners to pursue careers in these fields,” said Lekitlane.

Teachers are reminded to complete all nomination forms accurately, including certified copies of qualifications and proof of registration with the South African Council for Educators. Incomplete submissions or falsified documentation will result in disqualification.
