The VKB Knights officially got their 2016/17 campaign underway this morning with their annual golf day at the Bloemfontein Golf Club.

The golf day along with tomorrow night’s awards function traditionally marks the start of their new season.

The team has a new captain for the new season, with the new boy on the block, Theunis de Bruyn, taking over the leadership role.

De Bruyn has been on loan at the Knights from the Titans in the past, but has made the move to Central South Africa along with the Proteas David Miller, Robin Petersen and Marchandt de Lange.

The Knights CEO, Johan van Heerden, thanks the former captain, Werner Coetsee, for leading the team aplomb over the past few seasons.

“Werner (Coetsee) was absolutely fantastic with the way in which he led the team over the last few years and I want to thank for all the effort he has put in.

“We’re in a new campaign, with a new captaincy and new ideas.

“I’m as excited as I was as a young guy looking at all the posters of international players on my wall.

“I feel that I can put pictures of these guys up on my wall, I’m really looking forward to a fantastic year.”

De Lange also marked his arrival in the City of Roses by getting engaged to Kristina Hopkins recently.

The annual awards dinner will be taking place tomorrow evening at Emoya Estate in Bloemfontein.
