The big-hitting young Proteas batter Dewald Brevis truly announced himself on the world stage on Tuesday, helping guide South Africa to a series-levelling 53-run win against Australia in the second T20 International in Darwin.

Batting first, South Africa posted 218/7 in their 20 overs, thanks to an outstanding knock of 125* off 56 balls by Brevis, the second-fastest century in South African T20I history. He reached his maiden ton in just 41 balls, only five deliveries slower than David Miller’s 101* off 36 balls against Bangladesh in Potchefstroom back in October 2017.

The 22-year-old struck 12 fours and eight sixes to become the youngest South African to score a T20 International century. Even more remarkably, he broke former captain Faf du Plessis’ record of 119, which he scored against the West Indies in Johannesburg in January 2015.

Brevis’ ton set the tone for South Africa with the ball as well.

Corbin Bosch, who plays alongside Brevis at the Titans, took 3/20, while teenager Kwena Maphaka grabbed 3/57 as Australia were bowled out for 165 in 17.4 overs.

Following his record-breaking feat, Brevis said he feels blessed with a special talent and intends to use it to the fullest.

“I believe God blessed me with a talent to play like that, to play aggressively,” said Brevis.

“On 28 December 2024, I made that commitment. A few people, who know who they are, were there for me. The main thing was just to be the original Dewald, to stay true to myself, and to go after every ball, wherever it is, and play it.”

The youngster added that his aggressive approach at the crease comes naturally, and that won’t change.

“That’s just my natural way of hitting. I’ve faced thousands of balls, and I just want to go out there, enjoy it, have fun, watch the ball, and then if it’s there, it happens. I don’t try to do it, I’m just being myself and having fun. Watch the ball, and it happens.”

The T20 International series will conclude on Saturday, with Australia and South Africa facing off in the decider at Cazaly’s Stadium in Cairns.
