It was a dream-start to major’s golf for the South African MJ Daffue during the first round of the 122nd US Open being played at the Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.
Daffue, who earned his PGA Tour card just last month, carded an open round of three-under-par 67 for a share of second during what is his debut at a major.
Daffue is one stroke off the lead in the share for second along with four other players, including Rory McIlroy.
Daffue said his putter was working well during the opening round, while he was also happy with how the strategy worked out.
“I think a lot of things worked well for me, but it was especially the putter.
“I put a lot of work in on my speed on the greens because I'm not used to the US Open speed. That translated into leaving myself in good spots and making it as easy as I can. Sometimes it meant hitting it into the rough.
“We had a good strategy and I drove the ball pretty decent and sometimes when I missed the fairway, I missed it in good spots.
“It was about executing the strategy and I can't believe how relaxed I was out there.”
Canada's Adam Hadwin holds the first-round lead on four-under-par 66.
