Mondia Woodlands: Advocating for mental health─── 10:24 Thu, 24 Oct 2024
In today's fast-paced world, the significance of mental health cannot be overstated, particularly in South Africa, which grapples with one of the highest rates of mental health disorders globally.
Yet, despite the alarming prevalence, the country struggles with inadequate services, a shortage of mental health professionals, and limited resources. Mondia Woodlands, a licensed and registered psychiatric hospital just outside Woodland Hills Estate in Bloemfontein, is on the front lines of addressing these issues.
Pulane Nel-Sekepe spoke to Maritsa Naude, Mondia Woodlands' facilities manager, about Mondia's approach to addressing mental health challenges:
About Mondia Woodlands
Mondia Woodlands is dedicated to providing comprehensive care through two distinct programs: a Wellness Program and a Recovery Program. The Wellness Program focuses on individuals dealing with depression, trauma, loss, relationship struggles, and financial problems. It is designed to address the multifaceted issues that impact mental health and well-being. The Recovery Program, on the other hand, is specifically tailored for those battling substance use disorders or behavioural addictions, such as gambling. These programs emphasize that healing is a journey requiring support and expert care.
Mental Health: Why It Matters
Mental health is more than just emotional well-being—it impacts every aspect of our lives, from work performance to relationships and overall quality of life. "Mental health is a foundation for overall well-being," says Maritsa from Mondia Woodlands. She compares mental health to the foundation of a house: "If the foundation is weak or cracked, the house may develop problems over time, even if it looks fine from the outside."
This analogy reflects how ignoring mental health can cause ripple effects in various areas of life. Mondia Woodlands operates on a wellness framework that emphasizes eight dimensions of well-being: emotional, physical, social, intellectual, occupational, financial, environmental, and spiritual wellness. Each of these components plays a crucial role in an individual’s mental and physical health. By addressing them collectively, Mondia empowers individuals to build resilience and lead more balanced lives.
As South Africa observes Mental Health Awareness Month in October, the spotlight is on the importance of mental health in all facets of life. It is especially important to break the stigma that surrounds mental health issues, which often prevents individuals from seeking the care they need.
Mental Health in the Workplace
This year’s theme for Mental Health Awareness Month is Mental Health in the Workplace. It highlights how depression has become one of the leading causes of underperformance and disability in South Africa. Depression, often misunderstood as mere sadness, is a medical condition that requires proper treatment. If left untreated, it can have serious physical, emotional, and social consequences.
Mondia Woodlands is hosting a Men’s Wellness Day on the 26th of October 2024, aimed at tackling the stigma around depression and other mental health issues in the workplace. “Many people don’t recognize that depression can be a serious medical issue,” says Andre, one of Mondia’s advocates. "Our event will focus on educating men about the importance of seeking help and breaking down the barriers that prevent people from getting the treatment they need."
Join the Wellness Event
The Men’s Wellness Day event at Mondia Woodlands will take place from 9:00 to 11:00 at the Woodland Hills Wildlife Estate gate. Attendance is free, and the event will provide a platform for discussing mental health in the workplace, along with ways to maintain a balanced and resilient life. Anyone interested in attending can send a WhatsApp message to their helpline at 076 509 4011 for more information.
In a country where mental health issues are often overlooked, Mondia Woodlands continues to provide vital services and support. Their programs and awareness events are part of a larger effort to ensure that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, has the opportunity to build a strong foundation for their mental and physical health. This Mental Health Awareness Month, they encourage everyone to take the first step toward a healthier, more balanced life.
