Burundi schoolgirls who defaced Nkurunziza's picture provisionally released─── 10:37 Wed, 27 Mar 2019
Burundi has provisionally released three schoolgirls who were detained for allegedly scribbling on President Pierre Nkurunziza's picture in textbooks, Justice Minister Aimée Laurentine Kanyana has said.
A social media campaign to release the girls, aged 15, 16 and 17 under the hashtag #FreeOurGirls was launched two weeks ago after the girls were charged with insulting a head of state by drawing clown wigs and twirly images on the president's picture.
"We call on parents to strengthen the education of their children. We remind children that they have to respect authorities, that the age of criminal responsibility is 15," Kanyana told state broadcaster RTNB.
