Harrismith - The seven prisoners who escaped from the Harrismith prison on Friday allegedly had two firearms in their possession. Eastern Free State police spokesperson Mmako Mophiring says this is according to the escapees' cellmates. Two of the seven prisoners were rearrested shortly after the escape. Five are still sought. The missing prisoners face charges ranging from rape, housebreaking and robbery to stock theft. Mophiring has urged the public not to confront the suspects if they see them but rather to contact police:
Mophiring says police believe the five missing suspects could still be in the Qwaqwa area but cannot discount the possibility they may have fled elsewhere. A manhunt is underway. Police also recovered the getaway vehicle the two rearrested prisoners hijacked in Harrismith.
