No confirmation that woman killed near Marikana was NUM member─── 05:51 Tue, 13 Aug 2013

Rustenburg - North West police have not been able to confirm allegations that the woman miner who was shot dead near Lonmin's Marikana mine outside Rustenburg yesterday, was a member of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).
Police spokesperson, Thulani Ngubane said this in response to the NUM's claim that the murdered woman was a shop steward.
The 44-year-old was shot in the head while returning from a shop at Wonderkop at around 12.30pm.
The woman, who worked at Four Belt Shaft, was off duty at the time.
Ngubane said the gunman fled the scene, shooting randomly. Six 9mm cartridges were found nearby.
The motive is not immediately known. The murder happened days before the anniversary of the August 16 Marikana shooting during which 34 miners were shot dead and 78 wounded when police fired on them during strike-related violence.
