Bloemfontein - Top city officials came under fire last night during a public meeting organised by the Democratic Alliance in Bloemfontein over the recent water crisis.

Municipal manager Sibongile Mazibuko, deputy mayor Connie Rampai and executive director of infrastructure Luvuyo Ntoyi explained to residents the problems which contributed to the recent water shortages, and outlined medium and long term plans to prevent a similar situation in future.

However, many residents seemed unimpressed and questions were raised over project management skills, lack of engineering skills and outsourcing of maintenance work, among others.

Former Free State premier Beatrice Marshoff was also present and said while she understands the challenges faced by the municipality, answers must be given on short-term plans to prevent similar crises.

Residents in the northern suburbs were without water for nearly a week in the latest of a string of water shortages that have been plaguing Mangaung since September last year.
