Bloemfontein - Management at the Pelonomi hospital in Bloemfontein have been accused of lying to patients about acquiring equipment to increase the number of operations performed.

Several patients, who asked not to be named, said they held a meeting with management on Friday where the hospital's plans were discussed.

There are currently only three drills used for operations and the hospital’s equipment has to be sent away for sterilisation.

During the meeting, patients were allegedly told five new drills would have been received by yesterday and that the boiler room would be fixed in two week's time.

Doctors say they know nothing about this and only heard of the plans through patients.

Patients have started putting up posters next to their beds to display their frustration at having to wait for months to be operated on.

The Department of Health’s spokesperson, Mondli Mvambi, has not yet responded to OFM's enquiries.
