Bloemfontein - Members of national parliament’s portfolio committee on health are visiting the Free State today to conduct oversight visits at health centres in the province.

Committee chair Lindelwa Dunjwa told OFM News that the committee decided on the oversight visit after the Public Service Commission's report on its visit to Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein was discussed last month.

The report addressed issues such as a shortage of consumables and drugs and a backlog in maintenance of medical equipment. Staff shortages were also highlighted and the fact that some of the units in the hospital are operating with only one nurse per shift.

Tebogo Oepeng, spokesperson for Free State Health MEC Benny Malakoane, said Pelonomi Hospital and the medical depot are on the list of places to be visited by committee members.
