Harrismith - A father and baby burned to death when three cars collided with a truck, causing a fire on the N3 about 20km from Harrismith in the Free State on Tuesday evening.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said one vehicle veered into oncoming traffic, collided with a another car and then hit the truck and another vehicle.
He said paramedics arrived at the scene and found that a car and the truck were engulfed in flames with the driver of the car and a baby still trapped in the wreckage. Both were killed.
Botha said the mother escaped from the blaze but was seriously injured, while a female from one of the other vehicles escaped with minor injuries.
Paramedics worked fervently to stabilise the injured before transporting them to a hospital in Harrismith. The roadway is currently closed in all directions for further investigation.
