Ventersburg - The Aldam Holiday Resort near Ventersburg in the Free State has been cleared from any external source of food poisoning.

This comes after more than 80 people attending a team building session experienced severe stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea, after eating lunch at the resort on Monday.

Free State health spokesperson, Mondli Mvambi, says an environmental health analysis report showed the food, which included chicken, was not contaminated. He says the kitchen's hygiene was also found to be in order, while tested samples of water, as well as water from surrounding water sources, were declared clean by the national health laboratory services.

Mvambi says it is suspected that people fell ill because of the manner in which the food was prepared. He says the department is keeping a close eye on the situation.

Meanwhile the outcome of an investigation into an incident in which more than 170 primary and secondary learners at the Bainsvlei Combined School in Bloemfontein fell ill yesterday after eating lunch, including chicken, at the school’s hostel, is also expected to be released today.

All the affected learners are recovering well and were back at the school hostel yesterday afternoon.
