Damage being assessed after Rustenburg flooding | News Article

Rustenburg - Several houses were left without roofs and flooded following heavy rain in Rustenburg yesterday afternoon.

A tree fell on top of a house in Paardekraal, and in Rankelenyane and Mosenthal houses were flooded and roofs were blown off.

The Rustenburg local municipality spokesperson, Thapelo Matebesi, says rescue teams were dispatched to areas affected by the floods.

Last night disaster management teams were assessing the damage and it will only be known later today how many houses were affected.

Meanwhile, a woman was lucky to escape serious injuries when her vehicle was washed off the road during a flash flood earlier this evening. The incident occurred on Kings Road in Windsor, Randburg.

"It is understood that the vehicle was pushed onto an embankment and was stopped by a pallisade fence from going into a raging river," says ER24 spokesperson, Chitra Bodasing.

"Thankfully for the woman, believed to be in her 30's, a man and woman in another vehicle stopped to help her.

"The water was about a metre high. The people who stopped to help the woman managed to get her out of the vehicle.

Bodasing says ER24 paramedics were contacted by a bystander, "Thankfully, upon assessment, it was found that the woman was fine".

Following this incident, these paramedics from ER24 Joburg North, were informed about another flooding incident close to the Gertrude Street and River Road intersection in Randburg.

On arrival at the scene they found that part of a bridge had collapsed. Concrete blocks were washed away. Thankfully there were no injuries on scene.

"ER24 is urging people to be careful on the roads," adds Bodasing.

"Avoid flooded areas and low-water bridges. Remember that heavy downpour or storms can result in trees being uprooted, tree branches being broken as well as other dangerous items flowing onto the road. Keep headlights on and pay close attention to what is happening around you."
