Uncertainty and questions still surround a decision to reverse a provincial cabinet reshuffling by Northern Cape premier, Sylvia Lucas, less than a month ago.

This follows after the ANC in the Northern Cape confirmed that the deadline was set for today for Lucas to reverse her decision that led to the sacking of two MEC’s. MEC for finance, Mac Jack, and the MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Pauline Williams, were dumped and have to be reappointed.

The controversial reshuffling happened on the eve of the provincial elective conference that took place in Colesberg last month. The MEC for Roads and Public Works, and the MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, were swopped around and Alexandra Beukes was appointed as the MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison and former ANC chief whip in the Legislature, Gail Parker, as the new Finance MEC. It is, however, still unclear if Parker is going to return to her previous position. Northern Cape ANC spokesperson, Naledi Gaosekwe, says Lucas met this week with the ANC top six and committed to reversing the reshuffling by today.

The swop made Mxolisi Sokatsha the MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, while Bongiwe Mbinqo-Gigaba was appointed as the MEC for Roads and Public Works.

Before the reshuffling, the conference was already shrouded in controversy as it had been postponed several times after in-fighting lead to complaints about the nomination processes. Luthuli House then intervened to address some of the concerns and some branches were asked to redo their verification processes while others had to convene nomination meetings again. Lucas and then provincial secretary of the ANC in the province, Zamani Saul, were in the race for the provincial chairpersonship. Allegations then surfaced that Lucas reshuffled her cabinet in a bid to consolidate her support. She was, however, criticised for not consulting with the party’s NEC and the PEC.
