Top police official in the dock for #NCcorruption─── CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER 12:32 Tue, 15 Aug 2017

The police’s Provincial Head of Legal Services in the Northern Cape, who was arrested in connection with charges relating to corruption, is expected to be back in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court next month.
Major General Thuto Gaokgakwe Phefo was arrested by the Hawks on Sunday in Kimberley. National Hawks spokesperson, Hangwani Mulaudzi, says the 55-year-old Phefo’s arrest follows a lengthy joined investigation by the Hawks into allegations of solicitation.
Phefo allegedly helped a woman, who was a candidate for a position in the Northern Cape, to “get the position”.
“He allegedly had a hand in terms of trying to solicit money from the candidate,” says Mulaudzi.
He adds the National Prosecuting Authority was approached because the female candidate has already participated in the extortion.
A sting operation followed in which the last payment by the candidate was expected to be made on Sunday. Phefo was arrested by the Hawks in conjunction with its Crime Intelligence Unit.
Phefo briefly appeared in the Local Magistrate’s Court yesterday. He was released on R4000 bail. The case was postponed to September 13 for further investigation.
Police in the Northern Cape has not yet commented on whether Phefo was suspended pending the charges against him.
