Top police official suspended for #NCcorruption─── NOMAQHAWE MTEBELE 17:05 Thu, 17 Aug 2017

Northern Cape Head of Legal Services, Thuto Gaokgakwe Phefo, has been suspended. The police official was arrested on charges of corruption on Sunday.
This comes after an investigation of allegations that Phefo solicited money for a candidate to be appointed to a position in the province.
According to SAPS’ Mohale Ramatseba, the suspension will be followed by departmental hearings. The dates for the hearings have not been set yet.
The 55-year-old Phefo was arrested by the Hawks in Kimberley after a long joint investigation by the Hawks. Phefo allegedly offered to help a woman who was a candidate for a position, according to the Hawks’ Hangwani Mulaudzi.
He adds the National Prosecuting Authority was approached because the female candidate has already participated in the extortion. A sting operation followed in which the last payment by the candidate was expected to be made on Sunday.
Phefo briefly appeared in the Local Magistrate’s Court this week. He was released on R4000 bail. The case was postponed to September 13 for further investigation.
In the meantime, there will be someone appointed in an acting capacity to fill Phefo’s position. He is expected to reappear in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court next month.
