#ArmedForcesDay: Motorists from Bloemfontein to Kimberley to use R64─── NOMAQHAWE MTEBELE 12:25 Tue, 20 Feb 2018
Motorists are requested to use the R64 instead of the N8 when driving from Bloemfontein to Kimberley. This is ahead of the annual Armed Forces Day taking place in the Northern Cape capital on Wednesday.
Several main roads have been closed off to the public for army rehearsals, including Memorial, Carrington and Du Toitspan, among others. NC Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison’s Lesego Wolfe, said the N8 will be blocked off by military convoys. This would mean that motorists could wait between three to four hours on that route. According to Wolfe, the public’s patience is requested as this will be a big event for the province.
The R64 is an alternative route into Kimberley as a military convoy will be travelling via the N8 from the military base in Bloemfontein, said Wolfe. “From 4 o’clock until about 9 o’clock in the morning there will be a huge convoy,” he explained.
Municipal Offices will only open at 13:00 on Wednesday due to celebrations. “As a result of road closures, our offices will be inaccessible,” said a statement by the Sol Plaatje Municipality. All other services shall continue as normal, such a refuse collection, water and sanitation services, according to the municipality’s Sello Matsie.
