CUT shocked by student's Waterfront death─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 15:36 Tue, 21 Aug 2018

The Central University of Technology (CUT) in Bloemfontein is shocked by the death of one of its students who jumped off the rooftop of the Loch Logan Waterfront on Saturday, August 18.
The institution says the 20-year-old Lerothodi Mokati was a first-year student, pursuing a Diploma in Tourism Management. On Saturday evening, Mokati jumped off the rooftop of the Waterfront and fell into the water in front of the building. He is believed to have drowned, something which police will only comment on once the post-mortem is done.
CUT spokesperson, Dan Maritz, says the institution has never had a tragedy of this nature in the past, and management is extremely shocked by this weekend’s events. Maritz cautions the CUT cannot speculate as to what happened. It is alleged the 20-year-old student committed suicide. “His untimely passing is not only a loss to the family, but also to the university community. Our thoughts go out to the family, friends and fellow students in this moment of grief… may his soul rest in peace,” concludes the statement.
Police spokesperson, Thabo Covane, told OFM News the student, who was attempting to jump, was found by a Waterfront security guard. He says the guard tried to convince Mokati otherwise. When this did not work, the security guard called in his supervisor to assist. Police were called when the two men realised the 20-year-old was intent on jumping.
Authorities discovered the identity of the deceased while going through a backpack he had with him at the time. Police went to his home, which they say is in phase 10, on Saturday night to notify his next of kin of the incident, but were unable to, as his mother was not at home. Covane says Mokati’s mother came to the Park Road Station on Sunday.
