A report tabled by the embattled North West Social Development MEC at the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) has been described as not impressive and disappointing.

The report by MEC Hoffman Galeng emanates from allegations that he spent taxpayers’ money to hire private security to guard his house in Vryburg.

OFM News previously reported that the Committee Chairperson, Mahlakeng Mahlekeng, summoned the MEC to appear and answer on allegations that he used R50 000 monthly to hire security at home despite him officially residing in his Mahikeng house.

Mahlakeng tells OFM News today (Monday) that the committee received the report last week after the committee initially requested the MEC to go back and prepare a clear and detailed report on the saga.

This after Galeng and his department gave four different versions of what actually transpired.

Mahlakeng says they are set to meet with the department and go through the disappointing contents of the report soon.

“I do not want to comment on the contents of the report now because the department must come and take us through the report themselves. I can only tell you that and I am not necessarily impressed with the report,” says Mahlakeng.

But contrary to Mahlakeng’s statement that Galeng and his Department requested an extension to table a report, the departmental spokesperson, Petrus Siko, told OFM News today (Monday) they deny the allegations that they requested an extension and said they did table a report without any tussle to the committee.

Mahlekeng, however, said he did not want to be tangled up in the issue of when the report was tabled because the fact of the matter was the report was indeed tabled. He, however, denied commenting further on the details of the report.

Earlier the opposition parties in the North West called for the head of Galeng. DA MP, Joe McGluwa, told OFM News that Premier Job Mokgoro must fire Galeng amid allegations of him paying R50 000 every month for private security at his house in Vryburg. He also asked him to delay his planned cabinet reshuffling. McGluwa says Galeng must be dismissed as a matter of urgency and made to pay back all the money that has been spent on this frivolous expenditure item.

The EFF in the province earlier also called for Galeng to be fired.

The office of the premier also reacted to calls by opposition parties for the troubled Galeng to be axed amid allegations of him paying R50 000 every month for private security at his house in Vryburg. Job Mokgoro’s spokesperson, Vuyisile Ngesi, told OFM News that the opposition parties must allow the premier to study a report given to him by the troubled department on these allegations.
