FS Hawks nab nine for kidnapping─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 08:44 Sat, 10 Nov 2018
The nine suspects that were arrested in possession of R1 million in cash, six vehicles and gold nuggets in Welkom in the Free State, are expected to appear before the City’s Magistrate Court on Monday.
The nine suspects, aged between 31 and 38, were arrested on Friday pending charges of kidnapping and theft of unwrought precious metal. The Hawks’ spokesperson, S'fiso Nyakane, says the suspects were arrested following a raid they conducted together with members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Harmony Gold Mine Security and the Bidvest Coin Security.
He says the raid was part of an intensive investigation that had started earlier this week following the kidnapping of a 42-year-old woman.
The suspects allegedly held the 42-year-old hostage and demanded a ransom for her release. Nyakane says, in a statement, the matter was reported to the police in Welkom and was immediately referred to the Hawks for further investigation.
He adds that the ransom was made by the victim's husband on Thursday and the suspects were then tracked and they managed to arrest them on Friday.
