WATCH: Tempers flare amidst water crisis in #Kathu | News Article

Kathu residents in the Gamagara Municipality in the Northern Cape are in uproar at the municipal offices after many have not had water for more than two weeks now.

To make matters worse, according to eyewitnesses a municipal officer has just driven into the crowd in an attempt to leave the protesters behind.

Residents in this iron ore capital town of the province have taken to the streets to express their concerns over service delivery issues. It is alleged that their taps have run dry and that they have been without water for more than two weeks. Residents earlier today gathered in front of the Gamagara Local Municipality demanding to be addressed by its management regarding the water crisis and household water bills.

This financially troubled municipality is amongst the Northern Cape municipalities that are highly indebted to Eskom and the water boards. Its water bill alone stands at R14 million while it is more than R65 million in the red with Eskom. Meanwhile, the police spokesperson, Sergio Kock, says the police are monitoring the situation very closely and no arrests have yet been made at this stage nor have any injuries been reported.

The municipality is yet to respond to OFM News’ enquiries. This is a developing story.
