Mid-Morning Magic's Yolanda Maartens finds out what it means for the Odeion String Quartet at the UFS to be the custodians of the "Quartet of Peace' and why the meaning of these 4 instruments resonate with us, now more than ever before.

In 2010 the instruments for the Quartet of Peace were made. These beautiful string quartet musical instruments are used to promote worldwide the ideals of peace, reconciliation, freedom, and hope represented by South Africa’s four Nobel Peace Prize laureates.

The Quartet of Peace. is the name given to two violins, a viola and a cello made in Cape Town in 2010 by master craftsman Brian Lisus

Since October 2021 the Odeion String Quartet has become the new custodians of the “Quartet of Peace Instruments. 

The four string instruments represent South Africa’s four Nobel Laureates namely Luthuli, Tutu, De Klerk, and Mandela, and symbolises Freedom, Peace, Reconciliation, and Hope.

On Friday afternoon, 18 March 2022 at 14:00 in the Odeion Auditorium on UFS's main campus will host a special performance to which the public is invited.

Admission to the concert is free but the only requirement to gain access to the campus is proof of vaccination.

The special announcement lecture on the "Quartet of Peace" instruments takes place in the presence of the violin maker, Brian Lisus. Brian Lisus lives in the USA and has come out especially to service the instruments after they were already manufactured in 2010.
