Bloemfontein - The National Prosecuting Authority has not yet been able to provide clarity on statements allegedly made by one of its advocates during a weekend dialogue in the Cape about all images of naked children being considered child pornography.

NPA spokesperson Nathi Mncube says he is still waiting for clarity from advocate Bonnie Currie-Gamwo on what exactly was said and in what context.

Eye Witness News this week reported that Currie-Gamwo had cautioned parents about sharing naked photographs of their children on social networking sites like Facebook. According to the report, she said the Child Protection Act clearly outlines that this is a criminal offence as it is a form of child pornography.

Mncube says he will respond to a query on the issue as soon as possible, but cannot comment until he has all the relevant information at hand.

The statement has sparked uproar on internet forums, with many parents saying a draconian stance is necessary to prevent innocent pictures, for example children splashing in a bath, being abused by paedophiles.

Other comments have likened the stance to a “nanny state” mentality.
