Johannesburg - Gauteng Premier David Makhura has been elected a co-president at the World Association of Major Metropolises that met in Canada this week.

''The ANC Gauteng Province is proud of the recognition our deployees continue to receive from independent institutions,'' the party's provincial spokesperson, Motalatale Modiba, said on Saturday.

The association met in Montreal between 19 and 22 June and, besides electing Makhura co-president, also agreed to implement the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

South Africa ratified the agreement last year on 1 November and has since submitted its instrument of ratification to the Depository under the United Nations Secretary-General in New York.

The United States has indicated that it will withdraw from the Paris Agreement. Former Johannesburg mayor Parks Tau is a past co-president of the association.
