Former Mozambique president, Samora Machel, was one of 34 passengers that died when a plane crashed into the Lebombo Mountains in South Africa on 19 October 1986.
Machel was returning from an African leaders’ summit in Zambia when the Tupolev 134 plane he was on apparently crashed while following a false beacon.
Machel was a prominent leader of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO) and he led the Mozambican people in their fight for independence from Portugal.
The death of Mozambique's first president sent shockwaves throughout Southern Africa as well as the rest of the international community.
