Agri News Podcast: Foot and mouth disease contained, says minister | News Article

South Africa's foot and mouth disease outbreak has been contained, but is not over, says the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Senzeni Zokwana.

He was speaking after visiting one of the affected areas in Limpopo, saying the Vhembe District that was suspected to have an outbreak has been cleared of the disease. According to the departmental spokesperson, Khaye Nkwanyana, the minister visited the area to see how best an outbreak can be contained in future. He said the disease had spilled over into the free zone, and they had to move in very fast and isolate all the farms that were affected.

The virus, which causes lameness and reluctance to eat in affected animals, was detected in Limpopo earlier this year, and again recently. As a result, the World Organisation of Animal Health (OIE) suspended South Africa's status as a foot-and-mouth disease free zone.

Following the initial outbreak, many countries - like China - banned beef imported from SA. Meanwhile, eSwatini, Lesotho, Botswana, and Namibia have reopened for imports again.

Potchefstroom police have launched a manhunt for suspects after a robbery on a farm left a farm worker dead. According to NW police spokesperson, Adele Myburg, the farmer, who apparently rents the farm, was away for the weekend and the worker was staying on the farm to look after it.

The body of the farm worker was found by a woman who normally goes to the farm to feed the dogs. When she went to the farm in the morning, she reportedly noted that the front door of the house was open., and immediately called the police.

Myburg says police found the body of the 21-year-old man in the main bedroom, where he had a wound to his head, and his wrists and ankles were tied up. He was allegedly shot in the face but the police could not yet confirm the exact cause of death.

Myburg says the motive of the murder is still unknown but the suspects tried to open the safe inside the house but failed. Police are investigating a case of murder and no arrests have been made yet.
