Agri podcast: Possibility of snowfall in eastern Free State | News Article

The South African Weather Services (SAWS) has warned of snowfall that is expected in the eastern parts of the Free State from tomorrow morning until Saturday morning.

The models indicate 2cm of accumulated snowfall tomorrow. According to SAWS this will contribute to difficult driving conditions on the N3 and loss of livestock and crops. According to Siyabonga Mpati from the weather office in Bloemfontein, farmers have been advised to shelter their animals, and people should dress warm and avoid outdoor activities.

Meanwhile, people are informed to be aware of possible closed, icy road conditions. They should increase following distances when driving. SAWS has also advised people to make contact with their nearest disaster management specialists and keep listening to radio for any updates.

Farmers in KwaZulu-Natal is donating food aid despite the suffering hardship following the unrest. According to Agri SA, KwaZulu-Natal Agricultural Union (Kwalu) has distributed food donations worth more than R5 million in an attempt to restore stability to the deep rural parts of KwaZulu-Natal. Furthermore, a Farmer's Weekly article quotes Dr Kathy Hurly, Kwanalu project manager, who says that farmers need secure and stable rural environments in order to continue with their businesses. She adds that through doing this they are ultimately helping their producers. She says that milk trucks have been able to move from farms to processors again and that things are slowly returning to normal. Donations have already fed over 500 000 people, and will ensure food security for a further 300 000 in the next couple of weeks.

Women’s Day was celebrated across the agricultural spectrum of Central South Africa. The Free State Department of Rural Development and Land Reform took to Facebook to commemorate women and the work they continuously do for the agricultural sector in the Free State. In a Facebook post on Monday, Departmental premier, William Bulwane, thanked all the wonderful and lovely women in the Agricultural sector for their valuable contribution. He says that there is something special about a woman who dominates in a man's world and that it takes a certain grace, strength,  intelligence, fearlessness, and nerve to never take no for an answer. Bulwane adds that a woman's patience, unconditional love, and ability to bond with family inspires those she's surrounded by. He ends by saying that this Woman's Day and Month belongs to all the women - "may they prosper and stand firm in the course of life".
