Agri podcast: Livestock facilities handed over to NW communities | News Article

In ongoing efforts to assist livestock farmers in rural areas of North West, the MEC of Agriculture and Rural Development, Desbo Mohono, will be handing over livestock handling facilities to eleven farming communities in the Bojanala Municipality.

The department says in a statement that the hand-over will take place on Wednesday, March 23, at Reitspruit Farm. These facilities will assist livestock farmers in circumventing challenges and provide ease in managing their livestock. Management practices, such as artificial insemination, castration, inoculation, dehorning, and weighing have increased the need for handling facilities in communities. The department further adds that Rural Animals infrastructure is highlighted as one of the key-value interventions in the National Agriculture and Agro-processing Master Plan.

One of the challenges that the raisin industry is currently facing in South Africa is the heavy rainfall in the Upington area in the Northern Cape. This is according to Pieter Botha, the area client manager for Netbank Business Banking in the Northern Cape. He says the heavy rainfall has resulted in a reduction in crop size.

There are sufficient grain supplies for South Africa and the neighbouring Southern African Custom Union countries for the foreseeable future, and therefore no need to panic that the country could experience shortages. This is according to the Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Thoko Didiza, after she met with food processors, leaders in the fruit and grains industry, agricultural trading groups, and farmer associations to discuss the availability of food suppliers and farming inputs amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Didiza stated that industry stakeholders have committed to sharing information about the food production conditions going forward, which will enable better planning and responses, should such be needed in the future. The Minister spoke to SABC News about this.
