Several cases of rabbit disease reported in Northern Cape─── ZENANDE MPAME 10:07 Mon, 17 Jul 2023
A rabbit hemorrhagic disease (RHD) outbreak is raging throughout the country and rabbit owners are urged to get their pets vaccinated.
A greater number of outbreaks were recorded from the Northern Cape (165), Western Cape (41), whereas fewer outbreaks were reported from the Free State (6) end the Eastern Cape (5). In Gauteng, an outbreak was most recently verified.
RHD doesn't endanger people or other domestic animals.
“South Africa had been historically RHD-free, up until the first outbreak in November 2022. Vaccinations against the disease were not previously allowed in the country,” said the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development spokesperson, Reggie Ngcobo.
RHD is brought on by an extremely infectious virus transmitted from one rabbit to another by direct contact with saliva, nasal secretions, urine, dung, blood, fur, or the corpses of affected animals.
Infected items include food, bedding, water, and cages can also transmit the disease.
By obtaining vaccination through their veterinarians, rabbit owners can either avoid or control the disease.
The nearest veterinarian should be notified of any dead or dying rabbits or hares for an investigation.
