“It is important to interact directly with farmers and agricultural organisations to gain a comprehensive understanding of the industry's challenges.”

Party leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA), John Steenhuisen, emphasised the significance of his experience at the 2024 Nampo Harvest Day in Bothaville, one of the largest agricultural exhibitions in the Southern Hemisphere.

Steenhuisen underscored the pivotal role of Nampo Harvest Day as a crucial meeting point for stakeholders and decision-makers in the agricultural sector. He stressed the importance of direct interaction with farmers and agricultural organisations to gain a comprehensive understanding of the industry's challenges.

Expressing his expectations for the event, Steenhuisen highlighted the need to engage with organised agricultural institutions to identify bottlenecks and issues affecting the sector. He emphasised translating these insights into actionable measures in Parliament, citing ongoing efforts to address infrastructure and port-related challenges impacting input costs and market access for farmers.

Despite enduring policy uncertainties and escalating input costs, Steenhuisen commended the resilience and innovation demonstrated by the agricultural sector. He praised the industry's ability to overcome obstacles and succeed, emphasising its crucial role in driving economic growth and food security in South Africa.

In discussing the broader significance of exhibitions like Nampo Harvest Day, Steenhuisen emphasised their role in facilitating the exchange of expertise and innovation within the industry. He highlighted the importance of showcasing new products and technologies to enhance yield and profitability, ultimately contributing to South Africa's food security objectives.

He concluded by highlighting the indispensable role of events like Nampo Harvest Day in fostering innovation, expertise, and collaboration within the agricultural sector, underscoring their critical importance for the nation's agricultural development and prosperity.
