In the heart of Phuthaditjhaba stands Seotlong Agricultural and Hotel School (SAHS), an institution redefining what it means to prepare young people for life beyond the classroom. By combining agricultural science with hospitality and tourism studies, the school offers a unique blend of academic education and hands-on training tailored to meet both local and national needs.

SAHS operates under the Free State department of education. “What sets this school apart is its dual focus on agriculture and hospitality. Seotlong equips learners with practical skills that open pathways to entrepreneurship, employment, and community development,” said teacherBenjamin Nhlapo.

“The school hosts five departments, including sheep farming, broiler and layer sections, piggery, dairy, and organic vegetable production. Each department operates independently, allowing learners to understand both income and expenditure,” explained Nhlapo.

Surrounded by fertile land and a rich farming culture, learners are actively involved in crop production, livestock management, and food processing.

The school also maintains a rigorous recording system to teach learners the importance of accurate record-keeping in farming.

Produce from the school, including spinach, eggs, and organic vegetables, is sold to local businesses, stores, and fast-food outlets. This generates income for the school, supports the local food economy, and promotes sustainable farming practices.

“Biosecurity is of utmost importance at our school. With so many animals on-site, every gate has a footbath, and no cars are allowed beyond the main gate,” Nhlapo added.

Seotlong Agricultural and Hotel School stands as a beacon of innovation in South Africa’s educational landscape. By blending agriculture, hospitality, and academic excellence, it empowers learners to grow food, serve communities, and shape a better future – one harvest and one service at a time.
