South Africa remains food secure with growth─── ISABEL VAN TONDER 12:38 Wed, 03 Dec 2025
South Africa remains a food secure country.
The Minister of Agriculture has welcomed the latest Statistics South Africa figures showing growth in the agricultural sector. The sector recorded a 1.1% increase in gross value added during the third quarter of 2025, following a 2.5% rise in the second quarter.
Notably, South African exports increased by 0.7%, driven primarily by stronger trade in vegetable and mineral products.

“Despite all the challenges the sector has faced,” said Steenhuisen, “it still managed, through a can-do attitude, to demonstrate remarkable resilience. This marks the fourth consecutive quarter of growth.
“It proves that perseverance and determination can overcome even the toughest obstacles.”
The Department of Agriculture also praised the season’s strong maize harvest of 16.6 million tons. It is the second-largest on record for South Africa.
Action against FMD
“One of our biggest challenges remains foot and mouth disease, which affects the livestock sector,” said Steenhuisen. “To address this, we will roll out a comprehensive vaccination programme to protect approximately 12 million cattle.
“This includes securing vaccines, training veterinarians and organising logistics for distribution.” Despite ongoing difficulties, the agricultural community and its value chains remain optimistic.
“Our farmers and stakeholders are at the forefront of ensuring that South Africa remains food secure while also contributing to the national economy,” he added.
“I applaud them. With favourable weather expected going into 2026 and increasing demand for our products in both new and existing markets, there is a great deal to look forward to.”
