‘Own It!’ - coming to OFM Nights from 2 May | News Article

A brand new feature is coming to OFM Nights from 2 May 2019.

Adversity, disappointment, and loss easily lead to despair. But what if what you thought was the end of the road, was merely a fork?

Be inspired by the fighters, who refuse to let circumstances dictate their fate. Those who continue to have vision even without sight, those who speak out, take pride in who they are and who they can help others be.

Tune in for ‘Own It!’, a moment of inspiration, presented by five courageous persons with disabilities, Thursdays 19:35 on OFM Nights.

Meet our contributors:

Vicki Fourie defines her life by the quote 'Courage isn't a gift, it's a decision.' Even though she has 97% hearing loss, she learnt from an early age how to speak like a hearing person and she excels in lip-reading as means of communication. Vicki is a former Miss Deaf South Africa 2009, as well as Miss Deaf International 2010 1st Princess. Currently, she's a motivational speaker.

Born in Matshepe Village in Mahikeng, Letlhogonolo Mafela is the epitome of bravery, determination and believing in oneself. He faces every challenge that comes his way head-on, despite being born without arms.  He added another success to his inspiring life story when he received his BCom degree in economics during the North-West University’s April autumn graduations. He uses his feet and mouth to write, control a computer and eat.

Vernon Barnard was born with glaucoma, an eye condition that left him blind after 16 eye operations to try and save his sight. Singing and motivating others is his passion followed closely by his love of sport, particularly cricket. His big breakthrough came in the form of MNet’s The Voice SA competition. After making it to the final round of The Voice SA, Vernon was signed with Universal Music.

In October 2009 Irene Fischer, then working as a radio presenter at OFM , was involved in a horrific car crash. The consequent damage to her brain left her as a hemiplegic with a slight speech impediment. She realised that there is a massive information gap in society regarding brain injuries and brain damage. Irene has thus decided to dedicate her life to make a difference.

Terry-Ann Adams grew up the only albino in her family, in her school, in her suburb and in her community. Born and raised in Eldorado Park in Johannesburg, she had to endure a lot of prejudice and discrimination. Today she is a model, radio presenter, disability rights activist, a motivational speaker and content producer.
