The exciting winger Ntokozo Makhaza is keeping his feet firmly on the ground, despite the buzz surrounding his upcoming move to the Toyota Cheetahs.

The 23-year-old is both humbled and thrilled by the opportunity to join the Bloemfontein-based outfit.

The Cheetahs pulled off something of a coup by securing the signature of the two-time Varsity Cup Player of the Year, fending off interest from several of South Africa’s bigger unions. Known for their brand of fast, attacking rugby, the Cheetahs believe Makhaza is the perfect fit for their dynamic style.

Born in Bethlehem and currently finishing his studies at the University of Cape Town, Makhaza will make the move to the Free State later this year. Along with his lightning pace, he brings a razor-sharp kicking game and a proven ability to rack up points.

He is, after all, the all-time leading points scorer in Varsity Cup history.

Speaking to OFM Sport, Makhaza said he’s confident that his game will flourish in the Cheetahs’ system. “I’m really excited about this new chapter with the Cheetahs. Their style of play is quite similar to what I’ve experienced with the Ikeys. It’s all about attacking rugby.”

“I honestly feel like I’ve got what it takes to thrive in that environment. My focus is on giving my best, not just for myself but for the team. I want to add value, and as the team grows, more opportunities will come for everyone involved.

“I’m genuinely grateful and humbled to be given this chance. I’ll do what I always do, give my best and leave the rest to God.”

Meanwhile, Cheetahs head coach Frans Steyn confirmed that Makhaza is just one of several fresh faces set to bolster the squad. Another notable addition is promising prop Tielman Nieuwoudt.

“We started this recruitment drive last year with a few players coming in after the Varsity Cup, especially from the Shimlas,” said Steyn. “We’ve managed to bring in some top-quality guys, and we’re being very intentional about who we sign. It’s about getting the right people, not just the right players.

“There are still a few more announcements to come in the next couple of weeks, and we’re really excited about what these new additions can bring to the setup.”

Looking ahead to the weekend, the Cheetahs face a must-win clash against the Valke in the seventh round of the SA Cup. The game kicks off at 15:00 on Saturday at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein.
